Nanyang Polytechnic (SIDM)

So previously, I wrote about my experience about NYP's School of Business Management (SBM) and today I'm gonna share with you guys a little more on...

SCHOOL OF INTERACTIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA

I'm definitely not a gamer but there's something about this course that I thought was pretty cool.

They have everything you need to create the special effects and animation you see in games & movies. From creating your first concept art piece to turning it into an actual animation... I finally got to see how it works....

This was where I was taught how images are usually captured and transformed into games with current technology. *fascinated*

Although I'm more into writing than programming, I thought it was interesting to find out how games & movies are actually produced.

I've always been really curious about how all these work and finally my doubts were cleared.

So what happens is that, a person would usually wear a bodysuit with dots that will be detected on the screen, and the person will do some movements so that the computer can record it. That is how they animate the characters that they've designed!

Zack below conducted a demo for us! He's a student at SIDM

Apparently, you'll get to learn how to create animation and effects you see in blockbuster movies like Ratatouille, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar 2!

The lecturer told me that besides having professional software to work on, students are also taught by experts who provide services to companies like Pixar, Disney and Lucasfilm! Wow..

Some of the artwork done by the year 1 & 2 students...

I really couldn't believe it when they told me that the work were drawn. They totally looked as if they were printed. haha. And what's the best part? Having an art background isn't compulsory bcos everything will be taught from basics.

I guess that's when your passion comes in. When you're determined to do something, you'll succeed eventually as long as you persevere. :)

Besides Digital Media Design (Games) or Digital Entertainment Technology (Games)... you can also pursue a Diploma in Digital Visual Effects or Motion Graphics and Broadcast Design.

Apparently, students will have the opportunity to be attached to USA where they are trained by Hollywood studio experts! And the school has some sort of partnership with Sony PlayStation®  whereby students will be taught how to develop PlayStation® like games.

Plus NYP is known for their motion graphics and programming of games!!! I guess it's what most boys desire???? (Not stereotyping here. Haha.)

There are also 2 other full time courses to choose from!

Diploma in Digital Media Design (Interaction Design)
Diploma in Digital Media Design (Animation)

Many of them studying in SIDM actually had a chance to showcase their work too. For instance, the motion graphics and on screen visuals from last year's National Day Parade (2012) were painstakingly done by and produced by SIDM students as well. They did very well at WorldSkills Singapore 2012 and they also work closely with MTV Asia!

And many of them actually had the opportunity to go abroad for their courses... How awesome can that be.

Some of the professions you get become include Visual Effects Artist, Film Production specialist, Technical Director, Game Designer, Storyboard Artist, Animation Producer, Illustrator. Cool huh :)

Normally when a school like this is so well known for their digital media skills, I would think their graduates will do well. ... And many of them have jobs in Lucasfilm Animation, Infinite Frameworks, WETA Digital, Ubisoft, and Blizzard Entertainment, USA... awesome huh?!

One of the many award-winning videos done by them...

The whole learning experience was definitely worthwhile! ;)

Do check out (SIDM) for more info!

Nanyang Polytechnic (SBM)

Are you ready for an exciting change?

So today I made my way to down to NYP and some of the lecturers brought me on a "school tour" to take a look at some of the courses I am interested in!

We visited the School of Business Management (SBM) to see the Mass Media Management areas as well as toured the School of Interactive & Digital Media (SIDM).

Now I'm gonna share with you all a bit of my experience :)
That's me looking through some magazines designed by the students from scratch, while the lecturer briefed me on the course patiently. Hee hee.

So basically, these were magazines made by the students from SBM and that really interests me because I told them that I was looking for a course that involves journalism.

Looks like some pretty legit magazine you see in stores right?!

Besides, they get to do the photography and design on their own, which I am keen on too.

So what these students do is that they actually collaborate with people and various brands to fill up this lifestyle mag.

And it's amazing how they did everything themselves from scratch.

Next, we moved on to the studio where the media students usually do their film production.

Right, this isn't really my kinda thing but I did enjoy the process of learning how all our videos are usually made behind the scenes. Definitely not easy?!

Me acting like I know how to film... lol

Me being broadcasted on the screen hahahaha. Cool or what.

So the lecturer was teaching me how the different machines serve different purposes and that the students have to follow the procedures given otherwise everything won't work out!

One mistake and you're doomed. lol

Apparently, not only do they do their videos indoors, they do some of them outdoors as well, which I was happy to know about, because what's more boring than having all your lessons conducted indoors?!

I also participated in an impromptu video filming session...

This is where the students brought me around to chill and take a look at a few of the many school facilities.

Outdoor rock climbing wall

The indoor rock wall!

The huge swimming pool

Shahril at the library cafe. He really loves NYP btw..

The school gardens and koi ponds

What's better than a school with McD.... Hahahaha fatz.

To give you guys a rough idea,
at NYP, the stuff you learn is directly related to your desired profession. As in, the school links you to the real world by giving you the opportunity to work with industry professionals. I heard some of the media students even got to shoot at F1!

Also SBM offers overseas student exchange programmes where you can spend one whole semester overseas..apparently you can choose from 27 universities in 13 countries...

They also offer internships abroad and locally. There's this 21-week internship programme where you can choose to work in media companies like MediaCorp, Singapore Press Holdings and Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific to gain valuable working experience.

I definitely would like to try studying or working abroad. Just look at all the countries they have on their list: Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada, USA, China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

All students will also be able to study foreign languages such as German, French, Japanese and Vietnamese. Cool huh?

It's easy to see why some students choose this course!

SBM offers 9 full-time diplomas in:

Of course, I'm not 101% certain that NYP will be my choice, but it has definitely become one of my choices now because it offers what I'm looking for. If you, like me, are interested in Mass Media Management, then you would be glad to know that the career options include the following:

Producer/Assistant Producer
Script/Research Writer
Journalist / Reporter
Production Executive
TV Programming Executive
Public Relations Executive
Advertising Account Executive
Media Marketing Executive
Digital Media Producer
Media Buyer

I like how the students were really bonded and how many are given the opportunity to showcase their talents. You know how some schools are pretty bias to the smart students only?

I'm pretty happy to know how they cater to the needs of the students.

I guess the main point is that I really like this course hehe.

Do check out this video for more info!

Recollections. (Moving on.)

I once felt like I've lost myself. Someone posted a question to me a few weeks back, "Can you remember when's the last time you were being your true self, and was genuinely happy?" I replied, "Not that I remember of."

Call me fake, and sometimes I agree too, bcos I feel like I've been hiding who I really am for quite some time. Folded under pressure, I'm so afraid of everyone's opinion towards me being myself.

It's really easy to lose yourself especially when everyone has something to say about everything you do.

I can't resist this crazy urge I'm having right now, to write about my recollections this year.

I don't know what's with all these sudden, overwhelming flashbacks that are keeping me wide awake at such hour but for one thing I know, I have to get this out of my chest.

This is prolly gonna bore a lot of you out, but I just thought there may be that minority who would be keen in reading this... Whatever it is, someday this post will be able to bring me the nostalgia when I chance upon this again.

Looking back, I haven't really been well liked by my peers since I was in Primary school. Particularly the girls. I have no idea why, but there's always this weird tension with almost every girl I met.

Somehow, this is the reason why besides finding it hard to find a good boyfriend, I've always found it extra tough to find a best friend.

Well, as I grew older I started to realize that it didn't really matter after all. Expectations will always lead to disappointments and I've learned that through the toughest way.

This year was a total breakthrough. I know I've mentioned this a million times, but I'm also aware I've never really went in depth about what I meant as well...

You know how much I detested school? I really did. For a period of time. I felt like besides dreading to do my work, one of the shittiest thing I had to put up with is "faking it."

What do I mean by faking it? Pretending to be fine. I bet most of you felt this before. It feels like you're suffocating from the lies that you tell yourself. That everything will be fine, that things will be better. It's hard to keep up with this masquerade.

I always feel that I'm really unlikeable. I won't deny I'm a very sensitive person and sometimes I get paranoid if everyone secretly hates me.

I don't know why are some people called friends when whenever something screws up, they start to take sides immediately without even knowing what's the truth behind everything.

Well personally when I encounter such situations, my first approach will be to try my best to salvage every friendship I could. Not bcos I need those friends, but bcos I want them. I still want them in my life. But after all these failed attempts I guess I lost it.

Why should I bother explaining if their motive wasn't even to hear me out, if all they wanted was to shut me out?

I'm very easily misunderstood for the things I say or do, prolly bcos I'm not that good at expressing myself, somehow my good intentions always turn bad.

Everyone assumes I lead a perf life...

Besides being in a pretty well-to-do family, I've the best parents in the world who dotes me and showers me with a whole heap of love...

But does that concludes the end of my life? Apparently no.

I've other things to deal with like any ordinary teen. Breakups, betrayals, insecurities, drama and more drama.

But I felt like I've changed. Even if it isn't significant enough for the majority of you to see it, I can feel it myself.

And it's a good change. I've learned how to let go of a lot of things I didn't want to.

You know, when you've something you're fearful of, you either use it to strengthen yourself or use it against yourself. Unfortunately, I wasn't that good at self control.

I used to fear a lot of things, I refused to step out of my comfort zone to make a change to my life. But it's only when I started to embrace my fears, I begin to counter all these problems.

This year, no doubt... It's a really hectic year for me. In fact, there wasn't a day that I remembered of, from the age of 13 until today, I could proudly say that life's good.

I enjoyed it though. I enjoyed all the experiences I've gained which built me into who I am today. Life is full of ups and downs isn't it? What's the thrill if you're gonna be happy everyday?

Moreover, I guess YOU are the only one who can determine how you want your day to be.

I was devastated, I was mad, I felt hurt, I felt like having to live another day would be such a pain in the ass.

But guess what? I'm so over it. I'm moving on. I've lost a bunch of friends, but I'm not gonna continue brooding over them anymore.

I still think about them, but I guess I'll never want someone who walked out on me at my lowest, back in my life again.

And you should too.

Despite everything, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those who stood by me until today. I love you all :) Especially my friends.

Some pictures from the start of this year until now. I'll be flying off soon, so I'm wishing you guys a happy 2013 in advance!

When you hit rock bottom, some people leave, some people choose to stay and fight it through it all with you.

Sometimes, who you love and care for most, might not be the one who loves and cares for you most.

You may have lost someone, but instead of wasting your time thinking about yesterday, why not channel the energy into making tomorrow a better day?

Till next year peeps! xoxo
